Does Adderall make you last longer in bed, but cause ED?

A lot of men want to last longer in bed and look for all kinds of different drugs, supplements and methods to do so.

Adderall is a drug with the potential to make you last longer, but there is nuance. And potential sexual side effects.

Read on to learn more.

What is Adderall and how it works

Adderal is a prescription medication used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a central nervous system stimulant. It’s the trade name for a drug with a combination of amphetamine salts.

Adderall is available in two major forms: an immediate-release version (sometimes referred to as “Adderall IR”) and an extended-release version (Adderall XR). Adderall lasts for about 5-8 hours, whereas Adderall XR typically lasts for 10-12 hours. Adderall does have a high potential for abuse and is widely abused, especially by college students.

People with ADHD symptoms tend to have lower levels of dopamine, especially in the prefrontal cortex. Increasing it with Adderal helps to improve focus.

Symptoms of ADHD include:

  • being unable to sit still, especially in calm or quiet surroundings.
  • constantly fidgeting.
  • being unable to concentrate on tasks.
  • excessive physical movement.
  • excessive talking.
  • being unable to wait their turn.
  • acting without thinking.
  • interrupting conversations

In truth, it’s not that people with ADHD can’t focus, they just struggle to do so on tasks they have no interest in. If they focus on something they have an interest in, they can focus for hours.

It is also used illicitly as an athletic performance enhancer, nootropic, appetite suppressant and fat loss agent. It’s also used as a recreational drug to make people feel euphoric.

How Adderall works

It works mainly by increasing:

  • Dopamine
  • Noradrenaline
  • Epinephrine
  • Serotonin
  • Histamine
  • Cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript (CART)

Dextroamphetamine and levoamphetamine (2 amphetamine salts in Adderall) activate trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1) and interact with vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2).

Normally, VMAT2 transports neurotransmitters (e.g., dopamine, histamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, etc.) from the intracellular fluid into its synaptic vesicles for storage for later release. Amphetamine reverses the action of VMAT2, thereby releasing these stored neurotransmitters into the neuron’s intracellular fluid.

Dopamine, histamine, noradrenaline and CART promote wakefulness, libido and orgasmic pleasure.

Premature ejaculation explained

Premature ejaculation (PE) or early ejaculation is one of the most common sexual dysfunction that affects 20-30% of men. Unlike ED, which is most prevalent in older men, PE is a common problem for men of all ages.

It impairs our sexual health and significantly reduces our confidence which leads to reduced sexual encounters.

There are four subtypes of PE:

  1. Primary (lifelong)
  2. Secondary (acquired)
  3. Variable
  4. Subjective

Primary PE has been present since the patient’s first sexual experiences, whereas secondary PE develops at some point further in life. Lifelong PE (LPE) occurs within 30-60 seconds after vaginal penetration with nearly every session. About 85% of men with LPE ejaculate within 60sec, whereas about 10-20% of men ejaculate within 1-2 minutes.

Variable PE (also called normal variable PE), as the name suggests, is characterized by the inconsistent occurrence of PE.

Subjective PE is defined by the patient complaining of PE even though intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) is normal.

Premature ejaculation is the inability to control your ejaculation.

Causes of premature ejaculation

Men suffering from the following have a much higher risk of also having PE:

  • Neurotransmitter dysregulation
  • Metabolic syndrome (high cholesterol, insulin resistance, etc.)
  • Diabetes
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Anxiety (sex therapists might help you overcome sexual anxiety)
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Inflammation from prostatitis, obesity, diabetes, sleep apnea, etc.
  • Relationship issues

Adderall on sexual function

In 2015, researchers questioned 1,159 amphetamine mono-illicit drug users. Half of them reported that amphetamine use had no impact on their sex life and sexual functions. The other half reported that amphetamine reduced erectile rigidity and sexual life satisfaction, enhanced orgasmic intensity, and prolonged ejaculation latency time. Additionally, amphetamine enhanced or reduced effects equally on sexual desire (R).

So it would seem that the responses are a bit all over the place.

Adderall on libido

Only about 50% of people using Adderall experience a boost in libido. The bigger the dose, the more likely it is to boost your libido (but also cause other side effects).

Some users engage in sexual intercourse marathons that last for several hours (R). This indicates increased sexual desire, increased duration of erections, and shorter refractory periods.

Amphetamines also promote risky sexual behavior, such as unprotected sex, group sex, etc.

Adderall on erections and sexual endurance

In this study, 23 out of 27 reported that Adderall prolonged intercourse (R). This is because it helps with erections and premature ejaculation.

A known side effect of Adderall is priapism (painful erections lasting more than 4 hours) (R).

According to this study, more than half of amphetamine users experience delayed ejaculation. These effects were more apparent at the beginning and reduced over time (R).

Interestingly, the first usage of Adderall is concomitant with the increased duration of sex and feeling more in control of the sex act. These effects gradually decrease. A decreased libido and various sexual dysfunctions such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and losing control during the sex act will appear over time (R).

A few testimonials from the study participants

  • A 30-year-old male user: I reached orgasm every 15 minutes, but it seemed nothing had happened. My sexual desire was very high. I did not let go of her, and this made her very tired. (R)
  • A 35-year-old male user: We had sex in different positions for 3 hours. We did not get tired at all! (R)

Adderall on sexual pleasure

An increase in dopamine and noradrenaline boosts sensitivity (e.g. physical touch) and increases the quality and quantity of sexual pleasure (R).

Here’s what people say when on amphetamines

  • A 44-year-old male user: The experience of sexual intercourse while on meth is so great that you feel the pleasure with all the cells in your body!
  • A 28-year-old male user: You feel like it is the highest point of satisfaction, there is nothing above that!
  • A 28-year-old male user: At first, it is so enjoyable that you feel everything is enjoyable!
  • A 37-year-old male user: It tasted differently. When I kissed my partner lips, those tasted like fruits.

Sexual function summary

At first, for roughly 50% of users, Adderall improves libido and erections and helps you gain control over your ejaculation.

For some men, Adderall might make them go faster. This is because dopamine and noradrenaline promote sensitivity. This increased sensitivity can push you over the edge too quickly.

However, over time, the opposite can happen, namely loss of libido and erectile dysfunction.

Side effects of Adderall

No drug is without side effects and here are a few. Here are 6 side effects of Adderall use.

#1 Adderall abstinence increased prolactin

Amphetamine abstinence leads to higher prolactin (R).

This is likely due to lower overall dopamine and desensitized dopamine receptors from prolonged use.

Additionally, Adderall is an appetite suppressant that can lead to malnourishment. Low intake of vitamins and minerals can also lead to low dopamine and testosterone and high prolactin.

#2 Adderall negatively affects fertility

Adderal might negatively affect fertility and reduce the chance of getting children (R, R, R).

#3 Adderall could negatively affect cardiovascular health

On February 9, 2006, the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee of the FDA recommended a ‘black box’ warning describing the cardiovascular disease risks of stimulants used to treat ADHD (R).

Some children who use Adderall tend to get high blood pressure. This might be because amphetamine might negatively affect the health of blood vessels and reduce vascular elasticity or vasorelaxation.

#4 Can Adderall affect testosterone?

Adderall has been shown to lower testosterone via a variety of mechanisms.

After a single dose of amphetamine, hCG-stimulated testosterone release was reduced in rats, while LH levels did not change (R). This indicates testicular damage and insensitivity to LH.

Another study found that acute amphetamine exerted a biphasic effect on testosterone production in mice: serum testosterone concentrations initially decreased and then increased, reaching a level higher than basal after 48 hours (R).

However, chronic use of amphetamine in rats leads to lower testosterone compared to rats not using amphetamine (R).

#5 Adderall causes dopamine dysfunction

Adderall can cause dopamine dysfunction, as evidenced by:

  • Reduced striatal dopamine D2/3 receptor availability (R).
  • Decreased dopamine release (R).

This will lead to even worse motivation and focus and sexual function compared to before using Adderall.

#6 Can Adderall cause erectile dysfunction?

The prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) is significantly higher in drug users compared to non-users (29.3% vs. 11.9%). (R)

ED and decreased sexual desire are most commonly seen in heroin, followed by amphetamine and MDMA mono-users (R).

Other negative effects of Adderall

  • Rapid heart rate
  • Sleep disorder
  • Sex addiction (it can alter the brain)
  • Weight loss due to loss of appetite
  • Mood swings
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Dry mouth
  • Physical dependence
  • Withdrawal symptoms when stopping

How to avoid Adderal side effects

The best way to avoid side effects is not to use the drug in the first place. The second best option is to use as small a dose as possible. The risk of side effects goes up dramatically with higher doses, so stick to lower doses.

3 ways to boost the effectiveness of Adderall

#1 Add a natural dopaminergic compound

Since Adderall promotes the release of dopamine and noradrenaline, it might help to use natural dopaminergic compounds with Adderall to reduce the dose required.

Other good dopaminergic compounds include:

  • Mucuna pruriens
  • Rhodiola
  • Catuaba bark
  • Tribulus Terrestris
  • Saffron
  • Avena Sativa
  • etc.

#2 Get more zinc

Zinc potentiates the effects of Adderall, due to its effect on dopamine.

Zinc has been shown to (RRRR):

  • Increase dopamine receptors.
  • Increase extracellular dopamine.
  • Inhibits dopamine uptake by neurons.

I always recommend getting zinc from food, but if you have no other option, then supplement some zinc.

#3 Use a sigma receptor agonist

Amphetamines increase dopamine by acting on the sigma receptor (R).

Natural sigma receptor agonists include:

  • Pregnenolone
  • DHEA
  • Choline

FAQ

How long does ED from Adderall last?

It depends on how quickly you can get your testosterone up and prolactin down. The faster you can get those in the optimal range, the faster you can get rid of ED.

How does Adderall affect you sexually?

Adderall improves sexual desire and pleasure, which dramatically enhances the sexual experience. This makes people even more addicted to Adderall.

Can Adderall decrease libido?

Yes, Adderall can over time decrease libido by decreasing testosterone, desensitizing dopamine receptors and increasing prolactin and serotonin.

Why does Adderall cause erectile dysfunction?

Adderall can cause ED by lowering testosterone and increasing prolactin.

Can Adderall make you horny?

Yes, Adderall can make you horny but promoting the release of dopamine, noradrenaline, and histamine.

Can Adderall cause permanent erectile dysfunction?

Adderall hasn’t been shown to harm the structures of the penis, therefor the ED isn’t permanent. Adderall-induced ED is likely caused by low testosterone and high prolactin, serotonin and catecholamines. Increasing testosterone and lowering prolactin will likely improve erectile function.

Does Adderall make you last longer in bed? Summary

Yes, Adderall makes you last longer in bed. However, over time it can have the opposite effect.

It can also contribute to prolonged sexual side effects such as low libido and erectile dysfunction and this will only reinforce the use of Adderall for the sexual benefits.

Having amazing sex on Adderall will make it even harder to get off. Especially if you start getting side effects. Then their desire to take more will be even greater.

One of the “benefits” of Adderall is that it can reverse the side effects of anti-depressants (SSRIs; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors).

This paper reports on five cases in which low dosages of the psychostimulants, dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate, administered on a p.r.n. basis, reversed the sexually inhibiting side effects of the SSRIs fluoxetine, sertraline, and paroxetine in patients with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.” (R)
